In class, our assignment today is to analyze our top two choices of genre for our magazine. We are doing this by getting two images of covers of each genre and compare/contrast the elements. I am analyzing two Food & Beverage magazine covers and two Fashion magazine covers. I focus on cover elements like mastheads, puffs, barcodes, fonts and central images.

Food & Beverage

These two magazines both fall under the Food & Beverage genre. One is "Cuisine Tonight" and the other is "FOOD" magazine. For similarities, we can see that both magazines are very colorful and make the food look tasty and eye-catching. They both use mastheads at the top and use multiple fonts. Both covers also use multiple fonts and cover lines to tell the reader what kinds of recipes are inside.

For differences, "Cuisine Tonight" feels more energetic and bold because of the bright colors and strong fonts, while the "FOOD" magazine feels calmer and cozy. "Cuisine Tonight" lists many specific foods like tacos and fajitas (which relates to what I might do for mine but I will elaborate in my conclusion), while "FOOD" magazine focuses more on everyday foods. "FOOD" magazine does have a puff in red to make it eye catching while the other has no puff. The central image for the "FOOD" magazine also looks more intentional.

Fashion & Design

Here we have two magazines that both belong to the Fashion genre. One is "Details" magazine and the other is a "Vogue" magazine. For similarities, both covers use a person as the central image which is very typical for fashion magazines and they have mastheads at the top to show the brand. They both include several cover lines on the sides that talk about lifestyle or beauty topics. Both magazines also have their barcode at the bottom of the cover. "Details" magazine includes a puff near the bottom that promotes a grooming guide and helps attract the reader. The "Vogue" magazine does not rely as much on puffs and instead focuses on the image and style. Neither magazine uses a strong sky line, it is just the brand. The "Details" magazine focuses more on mens fashion and lifestyle with darker colors, while the "Vogue" feels more trend focused. Even though they share similar elements, they use them differently to target different audiences.

After analyzing both the Food & Beverage and Fashion genres, I can see that each one has its own strengths and style. I chose to analyze a Mexican food magazine because I am Hispanic and if I decide to create a Food & Beverage magazine, I would like to include Hispanic recipes and culture. I find that it would give my magazine more depth and character than just a regular food magazine. Food magazines allow me to be creative with food, colors, and traditions that are meaningful and special to me. Fashion magazines are also visually strong, but food feels more personal and connected to my background. This analysis helped me understand which genre I would be more interested in using for my final magazine project.
