This is the best project, in terms of my enjoyment in the process of creating it, that I've ever had. This says a lot considering I am a Junior in High-school. First my teacher explained what Foley is. Foley is the art of adding the sounds to a clip after it it filmed. We watched several videos of examples and even played a game. The game consisted of a sound playing with no visual, and we had to guess what the sound is meant to imitate. This showed us the importance of sound and visuals going together.
Our teacher then proposed the project. We had the option of adding sound to a two minute clip of Shrek or Ratatouille. I, like most of my class, chose to do Ratatouille. Below you will find the complete video of my Foley project and the process I went through to create it.

When I first received the project, I was overwhelmed with the variety of empty sounds I'd have to fill. So, I knew the first thing I had to do was write them down. I listed all the sounds I would have to create, like a window opening and water boiling and there were over 20. Then, I imagined the sound and thought of what sounds around my house could make it. For example, for a small gulp-like gag, I opened my fridge and for the boiling water I blew into a straw dipped in water. I recorded the sound, then I would edit it into the video and see if it fit well. If it did, I would record myself making the noise as proof I did it myself, and if it didn't, I would re-do it until it did. Editing was time consuming, but I have previous experience in editing from my previous job. I played around with the audio volume and timing until it was near perfect. When I was satisfied with my work, I put it all on a drive and, done.
After all, I learned the power of editing and sound. Now when I watch an animated movie, I will appreciate all the sounds since I know how difficult it is to get it perfect. Foley art is an acuired skill and something that you need many tools for. Although you can get creative, if you don't have something to make exactly the sound you need, it won't be perfect.
